Missing our Georgia Peach
Monday, October 27, 2008 at 04:17AM A year has passed since my mother died of pancreatic cancer. I shared this milestone in my life with several friends who lost mothers the same year, or within two or three years. I guess we are of the age when the inevitable happens. So I had the support of others who were experiencing the same emotions and we all leaned on each other, and still do. I can't express my gratitude to those friends, my dear sister, and our family for their caring and love. I felt guilty at times for mourning the loss of a mother who lived to be 92, when many others had lost parents when they were so much younger but, one of those good friends assured me that the loss of your mother hurts the same no matter when it happens and I had every right to grieve my loss.
Enough already.....on this sad anniversary I am going to celebrate some things about my mom and her life and all the things she taught me!
- she was a "working mother" way before it was named and embraced
- she was a nurse before Penicillin and pre-packaged bags of glucose were invented
- she was a fabulous needle artist who spent hours patiently sewing, needlepointing, cross-stitching, quilting, crocheting ...... taking out stitches when necessary to re-do them perfectly.
- thank heavens she made me wear braces on my very crooked teeth!
- she made me go to church every Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday evening. When I say "made" me I mean like this....."if you're too sick to go to Sunday School in the morning, you're too sick to go anywhere for the rest of the day". Powerful, huh? It worked.
- she could miraculously tell I hadn't brushed my teeth even though I carefully wet the toothbrush and sink.....go figure !
- she was very frugal
- she was unselfish
- she was classy and took pride in her appearance.....she looked great in shirt-waist dresses
- back to the obvious clairvoyant thing....she could tell when I had brought all my cats in the house even though I got them out before she came home...
- she loved spending time with my children and taught them many good habits
- she didn't complain or whine
- she had a strong faith in God
- she was a great mother-in-law
I could go on and on with reasons why we miss her so but that's another good thing about her...she didn't go on and on.....and did I mention she was born in Hartwell Georgia? A real peach she was !
